Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado is known for his black and white images capturing real world moments featuring humans, their surroundings, and their trials.  With no distraction of color, the viewer can concentrate on the events displayed.  In Scene near the Marubo Maronal Village, State of Amazonas (1998) children stand near their mother beside shimmering water, deep in the rainforest.  While the mother works in unison with the land to gather necessities for the village in this rich environment, encroaching populations threaten their way of life. Yet Salgado suggests that humans and the land can continue to work together to sustain life.
